Bern, the federal capital, is situated in the heart of Switzerland, which in turn lies at the center of Europe. Thanks to its central location, Bern is easily accessible and a favorite starting point for trips and excursions to the Alps, the Bernese Oberland, the Swiss Mittelland (Emmental, Seeland), the Jura, Lake Geneva and its surroundings, the Swiss interior and the Valais. An additional attraction of Bern as your base is that it is possible to discover virtually the whole of Switzerland on a day or half-day excursion.

 

 

There are various ways to reach Bern:

  By plane
Bern-Belp airport offers a number of international connections. There is a direct rail connection to the intercontinental airports of Geneva and Zurich. More.
  By train
Bern connects directly to the international railway network. The Swiss hold the record in rail travel and the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) provide an excellent way to discover Switzerland. More.
  By car
Bern motorway intersection is connected directly to the E4, the  European long-distance highway, and so Bern is easily accessible to motorists. More.

Bernmobil (city transport services)

Tram and bus lines are well-networked and extensive. There are regular connections from the main railway station in all directions. Further information, timetables and network schedules are available online. Single journeys for zone 1-2 cost CHF 2.00 (valid in one direction for 30 minutes). Tickets for more zones cost CHF 3.80. Tickets can be obtained from the ticket automats (at tram/bus stops).

 

Special Bernmobil rail travel offers

Visitors are advised to purchase a BernCard.

 

Night buses

MOONLINER night buses operate on the following nights: Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The 18 different lines depart from the main station square of Bern. 15 to 20 minutes before the departure of the MOONLINER on the station square the passengers can reach from the centres of the nightlife of Bern (Bierhübeli, Matte, Marzili, Stufenbau Ittigen, Guisanplatz, Gutrtenbahn) to the main station with a special shuttle-bus. The cost varies according to distance (entire city area CHF 5.00). Subscription tickets are not valid on the MOONLINER service. The timetable and other useful information are available online.

Travel in and around Bern for persons residing outside Switzerland
