Access

Bern is connected to the European long-distance highway 4 (E4) and the national motorway network. Access to southern Switzerland and Italy is via the Lötschberg Tunnel/Simplon Pass or the St. Bernard road tunnel.

 

The City of Bern

Though access to hotels is guaranteed, the inner city of Bern is largely blocked off to through traffic, and you are advised to use public transport.

 

 

Traffic regulations

The traffic regulations listed below generally apply throughout Switzerland. The instructions displayed on traffic signs always have priority.

Speed limits:

  • Motorway 120 km/h
  • Dual carriageways often 100 km/h
  • Highways 100 km/h
  • Main roads 80 km/h
  • Roads in built-up areas 50 km/h

Motorway:

  • Green signing
  • Obligatory "vignette" (tax sticker) to be applied, clearly visible, to the windscreen (available from border customs posts, at post offices, automobile associations and railway stations). Validity: from 1st December to 31st January of the next year but one.

Maximum blood alcohol level:

  • From 1st January 2005: 0.5 per cent

Additional regulations:

  • Compulsory front and rear seat-belts
  • Children under 7 years must be in a child's seat or similar protective restraint.
  • Mobile phones: Using the telephone while driving is prohibited. Exception: when a hands-free system is used.
  • In winter: suitable tires; must be fitted with chains if necessary.
