The Burgerbibliothek of Bern is a cultural institution belonging to the community of Burghers of Bern. Founded in 1951, its origins date far back into the past.

It collects in its three departments the cultural heritage of Bern and makes it available to the public in its reading room. The Helvetica-Bernensia department includes manuscripts and archives describing Swiss and Bernese history. Besides numerous single items, some of extreme importance - such as the illustrated chronicles by Diebold Schilling - there are kept more than 350 private archives. The international famous Bongarsiana / Codices department collects Latin literature, in particular in manuscripts of the Carolingian period as well as Old French and Middle High German texts. The department of Prints and Drawings contains a collection of prints, drawings and photographs with more than 20'000 historical illustrated documents on Bern and its surroundings.
