Carnival in Bern has recently become the third largest event of its kind in Switzerland. It starts on the Thursday when the bear imprisoned in the Prison Tower is woken from his winter sleep by the "Ychüblete" (drumming) and released.

Masked revellers brave the winter temperatures and swarm through the streets and restaurants of the Old Town. "Guggenmusik-Cliques" (bands of carnival musicians) make 6 km-route along Bern's arcaded promenade Bern vibrate with their crazy rhythms and noisy music. The children's Carnival procession takes centre stage on Friday afternoon, while the main procession begins at 14.30 on Saturday afternoon. 60 to 70 floats weave their way through the streets of the Old Town watched by 50'000 enthusiastic spectators. This is followed by the huge monster concert. Street theatre and music takes place everywhere. Carnival continues until late into the night and totally takes over life in the capital.
